Volunteer FAQ
Everything you need to know about volunteering with Community Mow
Getting Started
How do I become a volunteer?
Simply visit our volunteer signup page and fill out the registration form. You'll need to provide basic contact information, your availability, and any equipment you can bring. Once registered, you'll receive a welcome email with next steps.
Do I need experience with lawn care?
No experience necessary! We welcome volunteers of all skill levels. We provide basic training and safety guidelines. Many of our volunteers learned as they went and found it rewarding to develop new skills while helping their community.
What equipment do I need to bring?
We appreciate when volunteers can bring their own mowers, but it's not required. We have some equipment available for loan. At minimum, please bring work gloves, closed-toe shoes, and weather-appropriate clothing. Safety glasses and ear protection are recommended.
Is there an age requirement?
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to operate power equipment. Younger volunteers (13-15) are welcome when accompanied by a parent or guardian. We encourage family volunteering as a great way to teach community service.
Scheduling & Assignments
How often am I expected to volunteer?
There's no minimum commitment - volunteer as much or as little as your schedule allows. Some volunteers help weekly, others monthly, and some only during peak growing season. Every contribution makes a difference.
How do I get assigned to jobs?
You can browse available jobs in your area through your volunteer dashboard and sign up for ones that fit your schedule. We also send email notifications about urgent needs and opportunities near you.
Can I choose which areas I work in?
Yes! You can set your preferred service radius and choose jobs based on location, timing, and difficulty level. Some volunteers prefer to work in their own neighborhood, while others enjoy exploring different areas.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Life happens! Please give as much notice as possible by updating your assignment through the volunteer dashboard or calling our hotline. This helps us find replacement volunteers and keeps our clients informed.
Safety & Guidelines
What safety precautions should I take?
Always wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and safety glasses when operating equipment. Check the yard for obstacles before mowing. Stay hydrated and take breaks in hot weather. Never mow wet grass or during storms.
Am I covered by insurance while volunteering?
Community Mow carries liability insurance that covers volunteers during official volunteer activities. However, we recommend checking with your personal insurance provider about coverage while volunteering.
What if I encounter a problem at a job site?
Contact our support hotline immediately for any safety concerns, equipment issues, or unexpected situations. Don't hesitate to leave if you feel unsafe - your wellbeing is our priority.
Recognition & Benefits
How are volunteer hours tracked?
Hours are automatically tracked when you check in and out of assignments through our system. You can also manually log hours through your volunteer dashboard. We provide verification letters for court-ordered community service, student service hours, or employer volunteer programs.

We celebrate our volunteers through monthly newsletters, social media features, and annual appreciation events. Volunteers who reach certain hour milestones receive Community Mow t-shirts and other recognition items.
