Your Role

Here's Exactly What You'll Do

No surprises. We want you to know what volunteering actually looks like before you apply.

🌿
Mow & Trim Lawns

The core of what we do. You mow the grass, trim the edges, and leave the yard clean. Most yards take 45–90 minutes. One visit makes a visible, real difference.

Most common
🍂
Seasonal Cleanup

Leaf removal in fall, light debris cleanup after storms. Often a one-time visit — great if you can only help occasionally.

Seasonal
✂️
Bush & Hedge Trimming

Keeping shrubs manageable for residents who can't safely use cutting tools due to age or limited mobility.

As needed
⛈️
Disaster Response

When Michigan storms hit, families need fast help. Disaster response volunteers clear debris and restore yards after severe weather events.

Emergency basis
Time Commitment

You Set Your Schedule. Even One Lawn Helps.

There are no quotas and no required hours. Most volunteers help once or twice a month — whenever it works for them.

2–3
hours per visit

A typical service visit including drive time, the job, and a quick check-in with the homeowner. That's it.

Once
or twice a month

That's what most volunteers do. There's no pressure to do more — but many choose to once they see the impact.

Solo or
with a group

Come alone, bring a friend, bring your family, or come with a church group or coworkers. Groups are welcome.

Who You'll Serve

Real People. Real Need.

Every request comes from someone genuinely struggling. These are your neighbors.

👴
Seniors

Elderly residents who can no longer safely operate a mower or handle the physical demands of yard work on their own.

🎖️
Veterans

Those who served our country and are now dealing with injuries or limited mobility that makes yard work difficult or impossible.

People with Disabilities

Individuals whose physical conditions make yard work unsafe — often facing HOA complaints or code violations without any help.

👪

Parents juggling work, kids, and finances who simply don't have the time, energy, or money to keep up with yard maintenance.

🏥

Those going through surgery recovery or serious illness who need temporary help while they get back on their feet.

💛
Families Facing Hardship

Households going through financial difficulty where paying for lawn care — even once — simply isn't possible right now.

Why It Matters

A Few Hours Can Relieve Weeks of Stress

For a lot of the people we serve, an overgrown lawn isn't just an eyesore — it's a source of real anxiety. It's a letter from the city. It's a neighbor complaint. It's a sign to them that things are slipping out of control during an already hard time.

We're not trying to solve everything. Community Mow exists to provide temporary relief during difficult seasons — to take one thing off someone's plate when they're elderly, disabled, recovering, or just overwhelmed. That's it.

A few hours of your time can genuinely change how someone feels about their week. That's worth showing up for.

Common Questions

Before You Apply

Answers to what most people wonder about before signing up.

Do I need my own lawn mower?
It helps but it's not required. If you have a mower, bring it. If you don't, note it on your application and we'll connect you with a team that has equipment. What matters most is your willingness to show up.
How often do I have to volunteer?
There's no minimum. You choose when you're available and we match requests accordingly. Some volunteers come out every weekend. Others help once a month or just during summer. Even one lawn makes a difference.
What if I sign up for a job and something comes up?
Life happens — just let us know as early as possible through your dashboard or by emailing hello@communitymow.org. We'll reassign the request so the homeowner isn't left waiting.
Can I bring my kids or friends?
Absolutely. Families, church groups, coworkers, friends — groups are all welcome. Just make sure anyone operating equipment can do so safely.
Is there any cost to me as a volunteer?
No. Volunteering with Community Mow is completely free. You give your time and energy — that's the contribution. We never ask volunteers for money.
Do I need landscaping experience?
No experience needed. If you can safely operate a push mower, you're qualified. Our founder has 10+ years in the industry and is happy to share tips, but the basics are all you need for most jobs.
What areas of Michigan do you serve?
We have the most demand in Oakland County and Metro Detroit right now, but we match requests based on volunteer locations. Wherever you are in Michigan, there's likely a family nearby who needs your help — or soon will.

A word from our founder

Jason — Founder & Executive Director

"After 10 years in the landscape industry, I kept meeting people who needed help but had no way to get it. A senior who couldn't afford $40 for a lawn mow. A veteran who couldn't physically do it anymore. Someone recovering from surgery watching their yard get overgrown.

I started Community Mow because the need was obvious and the solution was simple — connect people who can help with people who need it. If you have a mower and a few hours, you can genuinely change someone's week."
